Why Three Methods?

Approach: Nonlinear uncertainty propagation using higher-order Taylor series expansion. Accounts for covariance evolution and nonlinear relative motion without full Monte Carlo sampling.

Strengths: More accurate than linearized Foster for eccentric orbits, faster than Monte Carlo while capturing nonlinear effects.

Limitations: More complex implementation, higher-order terms may converge slowly for extreme geometries.

When Methods Disagree

Method disagreement indicates the conjunction has properties that challenge standard assumptions. Common causes of disagreement include:

  • Highly eccentric orbits: Relative motion becomes strongly nonlinear near perigee and apogee, violating Foster's linearization assumption.
  • Elongated covariance: Position uncertainty stretched along-track creates long ellipsoids that don't project cleanly onto collision plane.
